Sessions
This hands-on tutorial introduces participants to Kubernetes through practical
exercises rather than lectures. Instead of building a cluster from scratch, participants
connect to a pre-configured Kubernetes environment and learn how applications are
represented inside a cluster.
Using a simple containerised scientific web application, participants progressively
build a complete Kubernetes deployment by creating the minimum resources
required for a production-style application including Deployment, Service, Ingress,
and Persistent Volume Claim (PVC). Along the way, participants inspect running
resources, explore the Kubernetes controls, and learn how YAML manifests define
application behaviour.
The tutorial is aimed at attendees with little or no previous Kubernetes experience.
This tutorial builds on the Kubernetes concepts introduced in Tutorial 1 by
demonstrating how Helm simplifies application deployment and lifecycle
management.
Participants convert a manually deployed application into a reusable Helm chart,
parameterise configuration, perform upgrades and rollbacks, and learn how Helm
integrates into modern CI/CD workflows.
Examples are based on production deployment practices used by Data Central (AAO),
Macquarie University and partner institutions for deploying scientific applications to
Kubernetes.
